“Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship,” a touring exhibition organized by National Geographic and Premier Exhibitions, is now open at both the Grand Rapids Public Museum in Michigan and The Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg until April 19, 2015.
With over 200 artifacts, and extensive films and immersive media by Blue Bear Films, visitors explore the history and treasure of the only authenticated pirate ship in North American, the Whydah. An early 18th-century slave ship became a pirate ship when captured by young Captain Sam Bellamy who filled it with stolen treasure from 50 other vessels. It sank in a violent storm off Cape Cod nearly 300 years ago. For more than two decades, underwater explorer Barry Clifford has been recovering objects from this amazing historical time capsule.
